Web Animation Makes History: ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act’ Shatters Records with $36.6M Global Box Office Debut
The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, the highly anticipated theatrical finale to Gooseworx and Glitch Productions’ viral indie animation juggernaut, delivered a stunning $36.6 million global box office debut over its June 4–7 opening weekend. Screening across more than 5,700 cinemas worldwide—spanning the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico—the release marks a watershed moment for creator-led, independent animation on the big screen.
The massive rollout capitalized on unprecedented fan demand. Driven by staggering pre-sales that broke distributor records, multiple theater chains were forced to add showtimes and aggressively expand their theatrical footprints after initial blocks sold out in record time.
Domestic and European Box Office Breakdown
In the United States, where the event was distributed exclusively by Fathom Entertainment, The Last Act brought in a jaw-dropping $20.2 million over its four-day opening weekend. Playing in more than 2,200 theaters, the indie feature secured the #3 spot among new releases and ranked #5 overall at the domestic box office. The rollout fundamentally redefined expectations for specialty event cinema, shattering Fathom’s all-time records for pre-sales, 3-day opening weekend, and 4-day weekend grosses.
Across the Atlantic, Piece of Magic Entertainment handled exclusive distribution rights for Europe, pulling in $12.7 million (€11 million) across approximately 3,000 screens in 38 markets. The Last Act claimed the #1 spot on opening day in major territories including the UK, France, Spain, Poland, and the Benelux region.
Key Territory Highlights:
-
UK & Ireland: Grossed $3.5 million (£2.67 million) from 573 cinemas, landing comfortably in the weekend’s top five.
-
Germany: Secured $1.93 million (€1.68 million) from 421 theaters to finish third for the weekend.
-
France: Pulled in $1.8 million (€1.6 million) with 157,000 admissions, topping the box office on opening day despite strict local windowing laws limiting the film to just 500 total screenings.
-
Poland: Brought in $1.05 million (€923,000), finishing second overall.
-
Italy & Spain: Brought in $905,000 and $944,000 respectively.
International Fan Demand Explodes
Glitch Productions handled direct distribution across the rest of the globe, mirroring the domestic and European hot streaks. In the franchise’s home territory of Australia and New Zealand, the film cleared $1.4 million (A$1.98 million) from 211 Australian cinemas and $168,000 (NZ$289,000) from 56 cinemas in New Zealand, tracking at #2 on opening day in both countries.
Latin America proved to be another massive strongpoint for the indie animation house. Driven by an incredibly active regional fanbase, the release pulled in 585,000 admissions in Mexico alone, yielding a spectacular $2.1 million weekend and taking the #3 spot locally.
The Power of Community on the Big Screen
The unprecedented box office haul highlights a rapidly growing shift in consumer habits, proving that internet-native fandoms are highly eager to show up en masse for communal, event-driven theatrical experiences.
“This result showcases that cinemas have a unique power to bring fan communities together. It is also a testament that such releases can scale across territories and deliver outstanding box office results,” said Caspar Nadaud, CEO & Founder of Piece of Magic Entertainment. “We are proud to have partnered with Glitch Productions and to have been part of turning a digital-first franchise into a true international big-screen event.”
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, echoed that sentiment:
“The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act established several Fathom Entertainment presales records and scored a jaw-dropping $20M+ in box office receipts over the first four days in theatres, illustrating the power and appeal of bringing innovative content with established fanbases to the big screen. Partnering with Glitch for this indie animation project is the latest example of Fathom identifying innovative content creators… in redefining the expectations of prime cinematic content.”
Created by Cooper Smith Goodwin (known online as Gooseworx) and produced by the Brisbane-based Glitch Productions, The Amazing Digital Circus first took the internet by storm in October 2023. The surreal dark comedy—centered on a group of humans trapped as virtual reality avatars inside a chaotic, psychological circus prison—rapidly evolved into a historic online phenomenon, clearing well over 1 billion views on YouTube.
The Last Act serves as the grand finale of the property’s initial narrative arc, elegantly packaging Episode 8 alongside the completely unreleased, hour-long Episode 9. By offering the feature-length experience exclusively in theaters, Glitch gave dedicated fans the unique opportunity to experience the long-awaited conclusion together on the biggest screens possible before its eventual arrival on streaming platforms.
