Blood on the Snow: Crunchyroll and Xilam Team for Adult Animated Psychological Thriller ‘The Wolf’
The boundaries of adult animation are expanding into prestige, cinematic territory. Academy Award-nominated French studio Xilam Films has officially greenlit The Wolf, a dark, adult-targeted psychological thriller. Ahead of its heavily anticipated Work in Progress presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the project has secured major global backing, with anime streaming giant Crunchyroll pre-buying worldwide streaming rights (excluding China and Japan).
Based on the best-selling graphic novel by Jean-Marc Rochette—the celebrated creator behind Snowpiercer—the feature is a massive step into premium, long-form storytelling for Xilam. To bring the raw, elemental gravity of the book to the screen, the studio has reunited co-writers and directors Benjamin Massoubre and Fursy Teyssier, who previously spearheaded the creative vision behind Xilam’s 2020 Oscar-nominated masterpiece, I Lost My Body.
A Savage Quest for Vengeance in the Alps
Set deep within the punishing isolation of the French Alps, The Wolf centers on Gaspard, a hardened, grieving shepherd who lives a solitary life with his flock while haunted by the devastating loss of his son. When a massive, wandering apex predator breaches his territory and brutally slaughters his sheep, Gaspard’s fragile peace shatters. Blinded by absolute rage and unresolved grief, he embarks on a treacherous, obsessive hunt for vengeance across the frozen peaks—a descent that forces him to confront the furthest limits of his own sorrow and psychological guilt.
To match the intense thematic weight of the narrative, the filmmakers are deploying a striking hybrid visual style. By seamlessly blending cutting-edge 3D animation with expressive traditional drawing techniques, the production aims to capture the visceral, physical presence of a live-action thriller wrapped in a gorgeous, painterly aesthetic.
The feature’s premium feel is further elevated by a stellar voice cast. César Award winner Roschdy (Days of Glory) will anchor the film as Gaspard, starring alongside Virginie Efira (Elle).
