Recap: Duncanville Comic Con @ Home 2021 Panel

Duncanville’s Comic Con @ Home panel kicked off with moderator Michael Schneider introducing the guests, including the creators of the show and many of the stars. Of course, Mike and Julie Scully and Amy Poehler were in attendance, along with actors like Betsy Sodaro, Joy Osmanski, Riki Lindhome, and Ty Burrell.

The first few minutes opened up the event by allowing the creators to talk a bit about the creation of the show and what inspired it. Mike and Julie said that they take a lot of inspiration from their own lives (especially in certain moments like Duncan’s first time mouthing off to Jack in the diner!) as well as the lives of the cast. Amy mentioned that she’ll bring in funny bits of conversation that her own sons have contributed and those lines will work their way into the episode on occasion.

Later on, the panel got into the similarities and differences between the actors’ character’s and their real lives. Amy shared that playing Annie comes pretty naturally to her, but playing Duncan is a lot more fun. It was always her goal that people watching shouldn’t pick up on the fact that it’s the same person talking to herself. Riki mentioned that she was even more high-strung than Kimberly as a child, even being forced to take days off of school by her parents! But perhaps the best remark came from Joy, who said that since we’re usually pulled in the opposite direction, it’s fun to get to voice a little kid because of all the unfiltered things she can come up with.

There was time for a few fan questions towards the end. Someone asked what advice they would give to their characters. Amy suggested that Annie take up meditation while Ty said he would just tell Jack to relax and that everything would be okay. Riki passed along some really helpful advice to Kimberly about finding boys that actually like her back, while Joy said she would advise Jing to look into professions that can support multiple family members.

The Duncanville panel wrapped up with a brief tease of season three (Ninja the gamer is in the premiere, as well as a little progress on the Duncan/Mia front) along with a clip from later on this season from an episode in which Kimberly gets her braces removed. Riki was asked to write a song for the episode, and it’s promised to be very Disney-esqe. The clip, however, was of Mr. Mitch’s reprise—if the rest of this season is as fun as Wiz Khalifa singing about parsley, fans of the show have a lot to look forward to coming up!
