From Yharnam to the Big Screen: Sony Announces ‘Bloodborne’ Adult Animated Movie with Jacksepticeye Producing

In a move that has sent shockwaves through both the gaming and animation industries, Sony Pictures Entertainment has officially greenlit an adult animated feature film based on the 2015 PlayStation classic, Bloodborne.

The project marks a significant expansion of the “PlayStation Productions” initiative, which has recently found success with live-action adaptations like The Last of Us and Twisted Metal. However, for the gothic, eldritch horrors of Yharnam, Sony is turning to high-end animation to capture the game’s unique aesthetic.

A Surprise Producer: Jacksepticeye Boards the Hunt

Perhaps the most unexpected detail of the announcement is the involvement of Seán McLoughlin, better known to millions as the YouTube personality Jacksepticeye. McLoughlin will serve as an executive producer on the film through his production banner.

A long-time advocate for the game, McLoughlin’s deep familiarity with the “Soulsborne” lore is seen as a move to ensure the adaptation remains faithful to the punishing, atmosphere-heavy roots of the original title. “Bloodborne is a masterpiece of environmental storytelling,” McLoughlin said in a statement. “Animation allows us to lean into the surreal, nightmarish visuals of FromSoftware’s world in a way that live-action simply couldn’t replicate.”

The Studio Behind the Nightmare

Sony has tapped Blur Studio to handle the animation. Known for their work on the “Secret War” and “Sonnie’s Edge” episodes of Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots, Blur is well-positioned to handle the gore, intricate Victorian architecture, and cosmic monstrosities that define the Bloodborne universe.

The film is being developed as an R-rated (Adult) feature, promising to retain the visceral combat and dark themes that earned the game its cult status.

What We Know About the Plot

While specific casting has yet to be revealed, the film is reportedly a standalone story set within the city of Yharnam. It will follow a “Hunter” arriving in the city on the night of the Hunt, only to discover the terrifying truth behind the healing blood and the Great Ones.

The announcement mentions that the film will utilize a “highly stylized” aesthetic that blends traditional gothic horror with the frantic, kinetic energy of the game’s combat. Fans are already speculating whether the film will touch on the origins of the Healing Church or the tragedy of characters like Father Gascoigne and Lady Maria.

The Future of PlayStation Productions

This announcement underscores Sony’s commitment to exploring diverse mediums for its IP. By opting for animation over live-action for Bloodborne, Sony appears to be following the successful “prestige animation” blueprint set by projects like Arcane and Castlevania.

With Jacksepticeye’s creative input and Blur Studio’s technical prowess, Bloodborne is positioning itself to be one of the most ambitious video game adaptations to date. A release window has not yet been set, but production is reportedly well underway at Sony’s Burbank headquarters.
