Jo Koy-Starring Animated Series “This Functional Family” In Development With TruTV

Will it happen?

While it doesn’t appear that the upcoming new season of Adam Ruins Everything will feature any animated episodes, TruTV is trying its yearly hand at producing an animated series. In this case, it’s in collaboration with comedian Jo Koy, according to Deadline:

At the center of a fractured, patched-up, multi-racial, dysfunctional family is comedian Jo Koy: a guy who just wants to be a good son, a better dad, a decent brother, and a solid ex-husband. Oh, and maybe get his career and dating life on track if his family would just leave him the hell alone. Drawing upon real-life experiences and characters featured in Koy’s popular stand-up tour, this half-hour animated scripted series asks: what if the most real family on television was also a pretty weird cartoon? Created by Koy and Kirk RudellThis Functional Family (wt) will be produced by Stun with Koy, Rudell, Jeremy Colfer, Mark Feldstein, and Brad Roth serving as executive producers.

Our Take

As mentioned, TruTV likes to develop one new original animated series a year, very seldom if ever does the network really ‘go here’. Still though, Adam Ruins Everything is really good as an animated series and with the network having new found fame around a documentary trying to kill the longest-running animated comedy in primetime network history, there could be a play here.
