English Dub Review: Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia “Otchigin”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Sitara begins tutoring Sorghaghtani in Euclid’s Elements and learns more about Prince Tolui, the Otchigin.

Our Take:
In the previous episode, Tolui had mentioned that he stole Euclid’s Elements to give to his wife, Princess Sorghaghtani, with her purpose with it being unknown.  With Sitara, aka “Fatima”, being hired by Sorghaghtani as her tutor, we now know that the princess wanted it to share Western knowledge with her people.  While her intentions are somewhat noble, she is part of the Mongol population, and her people did bring chaos and ruin to everybody else.  So, it was pretty hard to offer some empathy towards the princess’s goal.  Sitara certainly feels the same way, especially after what the Mongols did to her family.  Regardless, she still has to play the part if she wants to complete her revenge.
Amid this tutor/princess “friendship”, the episode continues its exploration of Mongol history through the protagonist’s perspective and distinct presentation.  One such example is the death of Genghis Khan, resulting in Tolui becoming regent until his brother, Ögedei, was elected as the Mongol Empire’s second khan.  I honestly won’t be surprised if I leave this anime admired by a specific part of history I know absolutely nothing about.  As someone who’s hardly interested in world history, I’m still impressed by how it’s able to retain my interest regarding its engaging premise, Cristina Vee’s performance as Sitara, and unique art style.
