AMC Continues To Wow With Adult Animation Pickups With Order Of “Mega City Smiths”

AMC announced today that it has greenlit an innovative new dramady series from Steve Conrad (Patriot, Perpetual Grace, LTD, Wonder) and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (Robot Chicken, Crossing Swords) called Mega City Smiths. The network ordered an initial season of six, 30-minute, episodes scheduled for 2021.

Our story, unfolding via the stop-motion animation of baby dolls repurposed as a grown-up cast of characters, hinges on an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of fictional metropolis Mega City’s most famous magnate. Two intrepid detectives follow the case, rallying to fight against their city’s dangerous corruption, at a high cost to themselves and their families, all in pursuit of a gentler place to call home.

The series is created by Conrad, who will also serve as showrunner, with Jennifer Scher, Jeff Dieter and Tom Glynn as producers. Stoopid Buddy Stoodios’ Seth Green, John Harvatine IV, Matthew Senreich, Eric Towner and Chris Waters will serve as executive producers.

Our Take

Along with Pantheon, AMC is diverting from what other cable networks are doing with adult animation that is focused more on comedy, and instead, cross-pollinating the medium with fans of The Walking Dead in what could be a huge move for the industry. The concept of this series sounds very similar to Steve Conrad’s prior attempt with IFC called Timm’s Industrial Piping which I was hoping would eventually get an order so this sounds killer.
