The Parents Television Council Already Hates “Big Mouth”
Tomorrow, Netflix kicks off streaming of its new animated series, Big Mouth, produced by Titmouse studios and created by Andrew Goldberg and Nick Kroll. Ten episodes are on the way for a series and while a lot of people are excited about the streaming premiere, there’s one group of people that decided to be the ants at the proverbial picnic.
The Parents Television Council.
The PTC is claiming that Netflix is pushing animated porn. Here’s the statement from the organization in what their specific complaints are about the show:
This Friday, Netflix, the streaming service provider with nearly 51 million subscribers nationwide, is debuting an animated series called Big Mouth. This show is supposedly a “humorous” take on puberty, and contains frequent usage of the F-word as well as explicit terms to describe genitalia, menstruation and nocturnal emissions.
Big Mouth is rated TV-MA, and no child should watch it. But even the correct content rating may not be enough to ensure children are protected from shows like Big Mouth.
Here’s why:
The PTC’s recent special report, “Over the Top or a Race to the Bottom: A Parent’s Guide to Streaming Video”, found that Netflix frequently places child-friendly cartoons next to adult cartoons on the menu screen. So you could see Finding Dory listed alongside Family Guy, and if you are unaware of the sexual content that has been on Family Guy, you may assume that it is equally suitable for your child.
The PTC isn’t as up to date with technology know-how as the rest of the world, clearly, because if they were, they would know that you can setup custom Netflix profiles that are password-protected by an admin that can be used to set custom filters for content based on age.
In any event, this is just another PTC leaflet thinking that kids shouldn’t be allowed to watch what they want, and worst yet, the organization hasn’t even seen the show yet and are already making preconceived accusations based upon what they read probably on other Jesus-sites like the Christian Post or something.
Comedian John Mulaney (John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid, Saturday Night Live) lends his voice to the character of Andrew, while Kroll (who serves as co-creator, executive producer) voices many including best friend Nick. Maya Rudolph (Maya & Marty, Bridesmaids), Jason Mantzoukas (The League, Lady Dynamite), Jordan Peele (Keanu, Key and Peele), Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Documentary Now!), Jenny Slate (Girls, Lady Dynamite) and Jessi Klein (Inside Amy Schumer) are among those who lend their voice to the series.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
