English Dub Review: Jujutsu Kaisen “Tokyo Colony No. 1 – Part 5”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Megumi continues to hold his own against Reggie Star, using his incomplete Domain Expansion to combat Reggie’s Contractual Recreation. Meanwhile in Sendai Colony, Yuta faces four powerful sorcerers.

OUR TAKE

We’re here at the penultimate episode of the third season (yeah, as it turns out, this isn’t Part 1 of the third season, just the first part of the Culling Game arc, which will continue into the fourth season, so these twelve episodes are still just the whole third season) to see Megumi get another solid solo win against an ancient reincarnated sorcerer. As mentioned last time, these two are basically perfect opponents for each other, as both of their abilities rely heavily on summoning, even if it is in different ways. Reggie definitely has more range, providing massive weapons like cars and being able to heal his health and stamina with stuff like the spa receipt, but Megumi being the underdog ends up working to his advantage, as luring Reggie into a false sense of security proves to be his fatal mistake. This leads to a sad end for Reggie as he bleeds out next to a public pool, but for someone who already led a full life before, this is probably a fine way to finish his second life. He’s also nice enough to transfer all of his points to Megumi before he dies, even if it’s only like forty points. Still a bit of a way to go to get a hundred so they can add another rule, but it’s progress nonetheless. Hopefully Megumi gets at least one more chance to show off and get a fight to himself during this series.

And while this is only a small part of the episode, let’s talk about Yuta’s concurrent fight with a bunch of reincarnated sorcerers. We’ll get more time to focus on this in next week’s episode, which I guess will be the season finale, but it’s worth noting here that Yuta is basically as overpowered as it gets. It’s probably no coincidence that he reappeared in the story right after Gojo was taken off the board since we apparently need a good guy who is basically a walking cursed nuke to even the playing field for the protagonists. Plus, this fight is essentially going to be a highlight of what high level sorcerers can do, as well as just how varied and complicated this power system can get. I could probably tell you the ins and outs of Chakra control in Naruto or Shikai and Bankai in Bleach, maybe get a passing grade on a test about Nen in Hunter X Hunter, but there’s so much about Cursed Techniques in this show that I just sort of have to smile and nod at because there’s just not enough room in my brain to understand it. Still, for the season finale, a big fireworks show for the prototype protagonist of the series is not a bad way to go, so I’ll see you then for that.
