Bittersweet News for Fans: ‘Smiling Friends’ to End After Season 3
In a surprising and emotional announcement released on February 26, 2026, Smiling Friends creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack revealed that their hit Adult Swim series will conclude following the completion of its third season .
The duo took to YouTube to speak directly to their audience, opting for a personal video message over a standard press release to ensure fans heard the news “honestly”.
The Decision: Going Out on Top
The creators explained that the decision to end the show was entirely their own, citing a desire to maintain the high quality of the series rather than letting it become “slop” due to burnout. After years of non-stop work, both felt they had achieved what they set out to do. Hadel and Cusack emphasized that they are “control freaks” over the scripts and production, making it impossible to simply hand the show off to others to run. They expressed a preference for ending while the show is at its peak rather than dragging it on until audiences lose interest.
A Possible Return?
While the series is officially “ending,” the creators left the door cracked for future possibilities. They chose to say the show is ending rather than promising a “hiatus” to avoid giving fans false hope during what will be a long break. However, they noted that if they feel inspired in the future, they could return for a special or more episodes.
“Adult Swim are very supportive… they said go have a break, either come back or don’t.” — Michael Cusack
One Last Surprise: New Episodes Coming in April
Despite the heavy news, there is a silver lining for fans. Two “straggler” episodes that were completed last year will premiere on April 12, 2026, at 11:00 p.m. on Adult Swim. These bring the total count for Season 3 to 10 episodes.
The Legacy of the Smile
Hadel and Cusack took a moment to thank their “amazing” crew and the fanbase that turned the “insane project” into a cultural phenomenon. The creators were thanking everyone for the fan art, costumes, and memes that made the experience “surreal and also the two confirmed they will continue to work together on other projects outside of Smiling Friends.
For fans of Charlie, Pim, and the rest of the crew, April 12th will be a final opportunity to see the gang in action before the creators take their well-earned rest.
