English Dub Review: The Drops of God “A Light on a Long Road”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Shizuku and Tomine race across France to find the Eighth Apostle.
Our Take:
With the whole “mafia” solution out of the way, our eyes are now set on the Eighth Apostle search, and it starts with running a marathon. Since this serves as the season finale, it’s no surprise the anime concludes the first part of the journey by leaning more into its competitive side. However, it isn’t the only thing that has kept me engaged throughout the episode, as it also focuses on the growth between the two half-brothers, or in this case, the conclusion of the first phase of their growth. On Tomine’s side, he now starts to appreciate Shizuku’s undeniable love for all things wine while he and Shizuku race to the finish, which may slowly shift into a friendly rivalry later on. Well, assuming they announce a second season, which they haven’t yet as of this writing.
But the real heart of the season one finale is that the marathon and the chosen Apostle resemble one’s journey. In Yutaka’s case, his first wine started his journey to become a wine expert, prompting Shizuku and Tomine to continue their own with the people by their sides. It may have its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, the journey can be as rewarding as the destination itself. Speaking of which, we’re not that far off from the contest’s own conclusion, as we have about four more Apostles to solve before we reach the “Drops of God”. But again, that depends on whether we’re getting a season two or not. Even if we don’t get it, I’m at least satisfied with my own journey through the series, which did a pretty decent job capturing the thematic flavor and presentation of its source material.
