English Dub Review: Saga of Tanya The Evil “Operation Iron Hammer”

Overview

The Empire goes all-in on a plan to break the Federation army once and for all.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Saga of Tanya the Evil puts the Empire on the offensive once again, with Tanya and her “Salamander” unit given another difficult assignment. The military operation provides some solid moments, particularly through the clever use of tanks and mages, while Tanya continues to stand out despite clearly being exhausted by the constant fighting. However, beneath the battlefield success is the growing tension surrounding the Empire’s political leadership and its increasingly aggressive approach to the war.

The episode works best when it contrasts military victories with the high cost behind them. Rudersdorf’s scenes carry a somber tone, while the direction uses restrained expressions, cold visuals, and strong imagery to make the political side of the conflict feel increasingly uncomfortable. Tanya’s frustration also adds some much-needed humor, although the action itself is relatively brief. I also felt the pacing was noticeably rushed, with the increased focus on politics and strategy leaving less room for the kind of large-scale battles and character development that made the first season stand out.

Overall, this was a solid episode that continues to build the tension surrounding the Empire’s war effort without relying entirely on action. Tanya remains one of the highlights, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that her hopes for a quiet life are getting further away. The episode does a good job showing how decisions made far from the battlefield can create even more problems for the soldiers actually fighting, leaving the story in an increasingly uneasy position as the war continues.
