Review: The Legend of Vox Machina “Taryon, My Wayward Son” ;”De Rolo’s Eleven” ;”We Are His Blood”
Overview:
Doty, take this down. We’ve traveled to my hometown, which I was hoping to avoid. My family’s business is more complicated than I remembered. Short Stuff has strange visions, and Four Eyes is playing card games. I had some strong words for my father.
Doty, take this down. Four Eyes has devised a plan to break into a library. A LIBRARY. The Head Archivist is terrifying, but couldn’t we ask nicely? Jumbo accidentally did something clever, surprising everyone. Doty, document my contributions.
Doty, take this down. Jumbo is telling us a very old, very alarming story. Short Stuff visits family in a quaint town, but something feels… off. A friendly stranger seems a bit too friendly. I have a bad feeling about this one.
Our Take(Spoilers):
The best thing a piece of media can do is make you feel something. Whether that’s anger, sadness, love, anything at all. Six months ago, my dog and best friend passed away. I bring that up because two of the episodes in this batch deal with death and its effect on the living. Whether that comes in the form of Vax dealing with his impending death because of the Matron of Ravens or Pike losing her grandfather, it was a main focus of the episodes. I would have appreciated not being a blubbering mess for an hour after watching these episodes, but that’s also why I love television, movies, video games, and books. They offer up a way to help us deal with and understand ourselves.
If you had told me after the first episode of The Legend of Vox Machina that it would make me cry and feel introspective, I would not have believed you. I was thinking about how far these characters have come, and while they still have many issues, they at least face them now.
Taryon is still annoying, but he’s growing on me. I found out he’s voiced by Wayne Brady, and I was impressed; I could barely tell. The character of Taryon is a little more sympathetic to me now that we see how his father treats him. I’m definitely more interested in the character moving forward.
Scanlan has been noticeably absent in the first six episodes. I thought for sure he would make an appearance by now. But with his Vestige of Divergance being crucial to the upcoming fight, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before we see our favorite bard again.
