English Dub Review: Yowayowa Sensei “Spooky Scary Sensei”

Overview:

Abikura is looking forward to a perfectly ordinary, uncomplicated school year. Unfortunately, his new teacher is anything but.

Our Take:

This is an ecchi show, which means we’re going to see a lot of tits and ass. Everything is covered by clothing, mind you, but that’s the type of show this is, first and foremost. If that’s a dealbreaker for you, I can understand it. One thing I will say is that I feel like this show will have some real heart to it underneath all the provocative imagery you’re inundated with. I have nothing to go off for that feeling other than liking how Abikura handles the clumsy Hiyori.

The cast is fantastic so far. We have Bryson Bagus as Abikura and Karlii Hoch as Hiyori. If you’ve been following my review of The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen, you’ll know that I have a high opinion of Karlii Hoch. Hiyori, I think, is going to be a good character for her as well. My only issue with Hyori’s voice is that she talks so quietly it’s hard to hear her sometimes.

I’m excited to get a new anime with Bryson Bagus as a lead. I know him most for playing Bell Cranel in Danmachi and Shouyou Hinata in Haikyu!! He’s well established by this point, and I’m excited to see if this character becomes as memorable as some of his other ones.

I can’t tell whether this will have romance in a traditional sense, with Abikura being a student and Hiyori being a teacher and all. But it seems there are other female characters to be introduced, so we will see. In fact, it seems like all the other important characters are exclusively girls. I’ll wait to see for sure before passing judgment.

As I mentioned before, I’m hopeful that this show has heart. Hiyori is a new teacher who wants to do her best, but she’s so clumsy that she makes a mess of things. People are scared of her because she mumbles, and people think she’s cursing them. She has a lot of highlighted tabs to make sure she remembers things, and people mistake them for talismans.

The first episode of a series is always a difficult one to judge. If you’re not a fan of Echhi shows, then I think this one is going to be a tough ask for you to watch. I hope I’m right and there’s more to this show than it seems.
