OUR TAKE

More bundle reviews as I desperately catch up with what I’m behind on! Though I do remember there being a bit of a Crunchyroll-imposed delay as the fifth episode did glitch with not releasing the dub. Anyway, last we discussed Sera and her new life, she had just helped defend the townspeople of the barbarian village from a sudden dragon attack, the first indication in the story of more fantastical elements happening in this world. Well, we follow that up pretty quickly by revealing that Veor and the barbarians have good relations with other fantasy races, such as your standard garden variety pack of dwarves, elves, fairies, and plant people, though they all go by different names because I guess those typical classifications were too normal. On top of that, there also exist demonic life stealing beings called fiends, which they come across while fighting off a group called the Commoneras Order, a band of religious zealots led by a woman named Malcius (whose over the top reactions to things are funny at first but grow tiring after a point) who is there to rescue Sera before needing to be rescued herself. And as the cherry on top, Sera’s mentor and foster mother Wysteresia, whom Sera assumed died fighting barbarians, is actually alive and well, as well as the mother of Veor, who is revealed to be just eighteen years old, eight years younger than Sera, despite looking like he’s in his late forties (mostly due to his hair, build, and beard).

As for the overall character development over these episodes, there isn’t a bunch, but what we do have is significant and notable. Obviously we are continuing to see Sera further get comfortable in her new surroundings, as well as see things she apparently never thought could exist in her old kingdom. But as strange and new as this all may seem to her at first, apparently it is all quite normal and average for those around her, including having warrior women be captured by barbarians and eventually marry them, as she reunites with an old friend under her command who she thought was dead AND her old mentor who she thought was dead, both of which are now wives and mothers. Not sure if that’s just to further push her to give in to her feelings for Veor or to give her reason to fight it, but it’s out there now. Though along with the introduction of fiends, we also meet Malcius, who is more of an ardent anti-barbarian person, but finds herself in a position similar to Sera at the start of the show, so we will see yet another example of how a woman taken in by this civilization reacts and adapts. But something tells me it will be a bit harder to win her over than it was all the others.
