English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “Investigating the Ruins”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Rimiru and friends enter ancient ruins, unaware that they are walking into a trap set by Mariabel.
OUR TAKE
It’s time for a new arc! This time about adventure and discovery of some ancient ruins that may be related to Milim and her own ancient past! Oh wait, it’s actually a trap and we’re turning into a full blown battle? I mean, that sounds like it could be fun but honestly I was kinda interested in learning more about these ruins for the worldbuilding, but…okay. The fights in this show can be fun even if they often feel kinda weightless at times with how many power ups everyone is getting. And it looks like we’ll still be getting some focus on Milim as her backstory of becoming a demon lord is acknowledged, and the OP hinted at her facing off against an ancient dragon she once befriended. So at the very least there’s some interesting conflict going on. In between the pew pews and the flashy visual effects. We’ll be dealing with this fight for the next couple episodes so there will be plenty of stuff to talk about in the coming weeks, but unfortunately all I can really focus on is how disappointed I am in Mariabel as a main antagonist figure of this series of arcs. Maybe I misjudged her and she was always meant to be more disposable, but other things really made it seem like she would be a longer lasting and more thorough challenge.
What makes me say this when she’s still clearly on the board? Well, despite her background as being connected to the upper echelons and influential decisions back on Earth, she’s been pretty rash in her moves against Tempest as of late, having so much of her plans easel traced back to her. And now she’s directly confronting Rimuru, which isn’t something a villain like her does until it’s absolutely necessary…or she’s about to have her last fight. Was I not supposed to see the ED animation of her controlling all the blood wine and gold piss as her being smarter than this? Yes, there are other fights happening that seem to indicate she’s planned for multiple factors, such as Milim, another demon lord, but everything else is indicating that she is actually out of cards to play now. But this series tends to lean on its massive fights between its several episodes of sitting in meetings, so perhaps my mistake was expecting too much. Ah well, let’s just see what next week has in store.
