English Dub Review: Petals Of Reincarnation “Farewell, Hearkening Soul”
Overview:
The latest episode of Petals of Reincarnation, “Farewell, Hearkening Soul,” has recently dropped. In the story, characters’ true motives are revealed or hinted at, all the while setting up a new conflict between two characters in particular.
Our Take:
During last week’s episode, Funasaka’s immortality was explored, as it gave him an advantage when fighting seemingly invulnerable enemies. However, after a conversation with Touya, it’s shared that he wants a battle that he won’t ultimately walk away from. As it’s pointed out, as a Complete Returner, he doesn’t have the memories of his past lives and cannot end the curse.
Meanwhile, Xiang Yu appears to have some interest in Touya, ordering him spared since he is an Incomplete Returner. This gives him the ability to grow past his current talents. For a character who started the story driven to discover any talents, this seems rather fitting.
Of course, it’s time for the battles with historical figures that this show is known for. This time, Caesar is the one who gets to stab someone in the back, revealing he has been spying on the Greats. The person stabbed is none other than Jubei, which also seems fitting with the show’s premise already bringing to mind a dark take on Jubei-chan: The Ninja Girl.
As the conflicts go on, it is hinted that Neumann has been covering up the true reason she declared war against the Sinners. However, as a character is set to sacrifice their own talents, as another starts to show their true colors, Touya is set to face off against Xiang Yu. This ends the story on quite the cliffhanger, as it already feels set up that there will be a few revelations amid the upcoming battle. Ultimately, the story is a study in the classic adage: who wants to live forever?
