English Dub Review: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War- The Calamity
Overview:
The first three episodes of the final season of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War have been compiled in movie form. Ichigo and Orihime take on Yhwach, while Kisuke and Yoruichi face off against Askin Nak Le Varr.
Our Take(Spoilers):
This is going to be a tough review for me to handle because, as a movie-going experience, I was a bit disappointed. I hadn’t done any research on this and thought it was a movie that would lead into the final season or something. It turns out that it’s the first three episodes of the season, and after it’s over, there is an interview with the creators that was kind of cool. Maybe if I had known, I wouldn’t have been as disappointed as I was. On the bright side, at least they were new episodes, which isn’t always the case, as we’ve learned.
I’m tempted to give this movie a 10/10 specifically because of the Yoruichi scene. Manga readers know exactly what scene I’m talking about. I’ve seen it hyped up for the last four years. I wasn’t prepared to see it animated because god lord. Don’t watch this with your significant other or your mother. Gooner bait aside, this was still a great way to get reintroduced to Bleach. I wish I had known it was episodes instead of a traditional movie.
Ichigo and Orihime, in particular, had great chemistry in this. During their fight with Yhwach, they worked together, and you could tell that Orihime was excited to finally be able to protect Ichigo. She had been wanting to “catch up” to him for a while.
I think the biggest letdown for me was where they decided to end it. Since it’s a bunch of episodes that are going to be part of a longer season, it kind of makes sense. But it stopped right when things were starting to heat up. Ichigo transformed and was about to smack the shit out of Yhwach, or I hope he does.
I’ll put it this way: I would suggest that unless you are a huge fan of behind-the-scenes features, you skip this one. I would rather watch this from the comfort of my own home and not spend $14 on a ticket and $20 on concessions. The show premieres on July 25th, so that’s only a month to wait for it, and you can save yourself a lot of money. Either way, I’m glad this show is finally back.
