The Architects of Absurdity: ‘Smiling Friends’ Trio Launch New ZAM Studios

The creative forces behind Adult Swim’s cult hit Smiling Friends are taking their unique blend of high-quality animation and anarchic humor to the next level. Creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, alongside producer Aron Fromm, have announced the launch of Zam Studios, a new Los Angeles-based independent animation studio dedicated to tackling what they see as the creative stagnation plaguing the industry.

ZAM Studios steps onto the scene not just as a production house, but as a mission-driven corrective, with the founders explicitly stating their intent to “fix” the modern animation landscape.

In a joint statement, the trio—known for their fearless experimentation with mixed media, art styles, and comedy—expressed a desire to recapture the “magic of years past.” They argue that contemporary animation often suffers from being “decentralized and bureaucratized,” resulting in creatively stiff and sterile content.

“ZAM has one clear mission: to fix that! In an industry overrun with waste, bloat and derivative work, we strive to bring back what matters — bold, high-quality animation made by people who actually understand the process!”

This ethos is central to ZAM’s strategy: focusing on craft, expertise, and a clear creative vision to ensure that projects are not only technically excellent but also possess the distinct, uncompromised comedic voice that made Smiling Friends a critical success.

Zam Studios is positioning itself as a comprehensive creative partner, offering a full spectrum of services across various platforms. The studio will focus on: High-Quality Animation and VFX, Client Services, Original Content Development

The studio is already deeply involved in major projects, notably handling all specialty and mixed media animation, live action, compositing, and visual effects for the upcoming third season of Smiling Friends, which is set to premiere on October 5, 2025. Their portfolio also includes shorts like Smiling Symphonies, the documentary Billy Idol Should Be Dead, and bumpers for Rick and Morty and Adult Swim.

With Michael Cusack (Yolo: Crystal Fantasy) and Zach Hadel (OneyPlays, Hellbenders) at the creative helm, and Aron Fromm guiding production, ZAM Studios is ready to apply its bold, uncompromising creative philosophy to a new era of animation production in Los Angeles.
