Rumiko Takahashi’s ‘MAO’ Anime English Dub Makes Official Premiere Debut on Hulu and Disney+

Fans of legendary manga artist Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha, Ranma ½) can now experience her latest supernatural dark fantasy epic in English. The English dub for the anime adaptation of MAO officially premiered today, August 24, 2026, streaming exclusively on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in select international territories.

VIZ Media holds the exclusive rights to the adaptation, managing distribution across North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand. Produced by Sunrise—the iconic studio behind Inuyasha and Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon—the series reunites Takahashi’s signature blend of time-traveling mystery, supernatural folklore, and high-stakes action.

A Time-Bending Supernatural Mystery

MAO follows Nanoka Kiba, a modern-day junior high student who survived a tragic accident as a child. Upon returning to the site of the crash, Nanoka finds herself mysteriously transported through time to Japan’s Taisho era (the early 1900s), a world teeming with dangerous ayakashi spirits.

There, she crosses paths with Mao, a shadowy 900-year-old onmyoji (exorcist) afflicted by a deadly cat demon curse. As Nanoka discovers her own latent supernatural abilities, she joins forces with Mao to investigate a series of grisly murders and uncover the dark secrets binding their fates across centuries.

With its English dub available starting today, MAO marks another major animated milestone for Takahashi’s storied career, bringing her dark, demon-hunting universe to a new generation of Western anime fans.
