Review: Adventure Time – Fionna and Cake “The Crocodile Who Bit a Log”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Fionna and Cake try to come up with solutions to take back the Sweet Spot, while Huntress Wizard tries getting something from the Heart of the Forest with disastrous results.

OUR TAKE

And now the two seemingly disparate storylines begin to collide! In a rather unexpected way, mostly in just how much Huntress Wizard is involved. A lot of this episode is deep diving into her past, the source of her magic, her connection to other “Green Wizards”, and how her efforts to save Finn get her literally torn up into eight seeds that are thrown across the multiverse. I kinda hoped we would lay off the multiverse stuff (aside from the connection between Fionna’s world and Ooo), but this series has surprised me before so I’m willing to see where this goes before passing judgement. If I had to wager a guess as to where this is heading though, I’d bet good money that this season will end with Huntress Wizard becoming the new source of Green Magic, what with the whole seed thing and being told she needs to know where to grow. As for Finn, he’s still not doing so good, but I don’t THINK this is where he dies, but it’s also been awhile since I watched “Together Again” from Distant Lands, so maybe this is all building up Finn’s actual death, which…would be a choice. Oh, and one of the wizards and one of the Banana Guards are voiced by the voice of Brak, Andy Merrill! Considering the first picture of him that comes up on a Google is him showing a dog bite he got from his job as an Amazon Driver, it’s nice that Warner Bros could throw him a…uh, help him out, after leaving him on his own for so long.

Then there’s Fionna and Cake, who you may remember are the title characters of this show. They’re still trying to get their Sweet Spot back, trying a heist and even almost taking it over with the Peppermint Tank, but ultimately deciding to try and buy the place. And hey, that’s neat enough of a plot, but it definitely feels more mundane than the stuff going on in Ooo, and I’d really hate it if the title characters got shoved aside just because the current writers wanted to do another Adventure Time season and used this show to do it. There is a bit near the end of the episode where Fionna reflects on how she’s not prepared for so many adult things, which I most definitely relate to as a Millennial, but it feels kind of out of place with everything else going on. Eh, maybe it’ll also fold into stuff as we go along.
