MAKE Unveils ‘Sunny Side Down’: A Cosmic Blend of Spaceballs Parody and Cheers Banter
MAKE Originals has launched Sunny Side Down, a new 2D animated micro-short series that humorously combines epic sci-fi parody with the relatable misery of working a dead-end job, even if that job is located in a supermassive black hole.
The series, which consists of six self-contained, approximately two-minute episodes, debuted its first installment on October 22nd, with new episodes scheduled to roll out every month. Sunny Side Down is entirely hand-drawn and was produced in collaboration with DeeDee Animation Studio.
Plot: Trapped in Cosmic Absurdity
The series centers on two co-workers trapped in an existential work environment: Nat, a human waitress with a massive ego and mad-scientist tendencies, who spends her breaks constantly constructing a device to escape the cosmic abyss. Yabba, a four-armed, ancient line cook who chain-smokes her way through breakfast service, acting as the jaded foil to Nat’s arrogance.
Natalia Poteryakhin, the series director, explained the core concept: “We wanted to capture that universal feeling of being completely stuck in life and trying to cope with how absurd our lives are, only blown up to a cosmic scale… Nat is just saying [she’ll get out tomorrow] while stuck right in the middle of a supermassive black hole.”
The debut of Sunny Side Down expands the catalog of MAKE Originals, the in-house shorts and short series division of MAKE, which recently expanded its Minneapolis studio to include over 25,000 square feet of stage space.
