Comic Review: Rick and Morty vs. The Universe – Last Mort Standing

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

After being chucked out of the universe by Parmesean, Morty awakens in a world full of miscellaneous forgotten Mortys and…hey wait, didn’t we just do this?

OUR TAKE

We’re at the final tie-in of the Rick and Morty vs. The Universe event and…well, I’m not sure exactly what to think of it. As mentioned in the review of the third proper issue, this is basically the same thing going on with Rick, who was dropped into a bunch of non-canonical rejected Ricks, but with Mortys, who apparently have to kill a hundred of themselves in order to get through a wacky Rick themed door (which may in fact be another alternate universe Rick?). So, my first question is why was THIS a tie-in instead of part of the main story. My follow up question would then be what made the Rick issue important enough to be in the main story, mainly because I kinda thought this was a Rick AND Morty story. Summer and the Parents being in tie-ins I get, but the second billed character? I’m at least glad that it’s not a carbon copy of the Rick issue, especially since the show itself has gone into excruciating detail on the differences in dynamic between a bunch of Ricks and a bunch of Mortys. A leader amongst a bunch of leaders versus a sidekick amongst a bunch of other sidekicks.

It does still end up ENDING essentially the same way, with both Rick and Morty plowing through multiple other versions of themselves and being the last one standing. And since this was written as a direct tie-in to a main story, you would naturally expect the ending of this line up with how Morty suddenly appeared at the end of the third main issue, right? RIGHT?! Well, not quite, as you may notice if you own both this and that issue, Morty just kinda crawls up the cliff to find Rick at the end of Issue 3, while at the end of this, the explosion from him destroying the planet just drops him back in Rick’s ship. They even say in the third issue that how Morty got back would be explained here but…no such luck. It’s like they didn’t coordinate how this would tie into the main series at all. But okay, whatever, we’re all done with the tie-in issues and can wrap this up in the final part of this event later this month. And then there’s the “The End” series coming right after, but we’ll see if we cover that. In the meantime, I’m just kind of ready for this series to be over with, fingers crossed it manages to at least go out on a high note.
