OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)The Roundtable convenes to share its results with Apocalypse, receiving rewards ranging from the location of potential targets, adding another seat to the table, and changing history so that everyone speaks English. But one quest was not completed, leading to a penalty: the creation of UMA Galaxy, which alters history so that alien life now exists and is about to invade Earth. Though all seems lost, Juiz is able to kill most of the invaders with her ability, but she tells Andy and Fuuko that they cannot let another penalty occur. This was their 99th penalty and if they get two more, it will trigger Ragnarok, which doesn’t sound ideal. They have three months to find another suitable member to join the table, as well as find the Negator known as Unrepair.OUR TAKEIt can be difficult to keep up with everything that happens in this episode, considering it went from talking to a magic talking book to a narrowly avoided alien invasion and treating it as something routine, but all of that craziness was to serve the end of establishing the major stakes dangling over the heads of all the Roundtable: avoiding the end of the world. When the talking book is named Apocalypse and the final penalty of his quests is called Ragnarok, you can tell something bad is on the horizon. Furthermore, if his powers and potential rewards and punishments both have the ability to rewrite history for the majority of the planet’s population, you can also gather that he’s not someone to mess with. This episode acts as both a transition from the Spoil arc to the next arc involving Unrepair AND an overall explanation of the Union as a whole. Someway or another, they found themselves in control of this weird book and started following its crazy rules to avoid the penalties. Considering they’ve now hit their NINETY NINTH out of one hundred and one, it seems that hasn’t been working out for them. I can only imagine what this version of the world started out as before it had its first retcon.Heck, maybe Negators were the result of a penalty, which may also explain why their memories are immune to changing things like making all of the world’s languages into English. Honestly, that’s kind of a disturbing change on its own. English is basically the only language I know (I should really take up Duolingo or something), but I’m not sure how I’d feel if the only reason most people knew how to say it was because they had their own languages taken away. I wonder if that’s how Shen felt finding out his assistant suddenly didn’t understand Chinese. A lot of culture is connected to a language after all, so who knows how much that’ll change for this world, and THAT was considered a “reward”! But regardless, we move onto the next arc and mission, with Andy and Fuuko off to find someone who could, based on his title, give Andy the death he’s been seeking. Based on his reaction to that, he doesn’t sound super thrilled about that, but I’m sure we’ll find out why when we get to it. Until then…I dunno, maybe I’ll take up Spanish?
