English Dub Review: Shy “The Lonely Ice and Small Flame”

Overview:

As Tzveta regains her memories, Shy and Spirit witness the tragedy of Letana’s adult life firsthand and learn how her ideals formed. The strength of her dark, frozen heart clashes against Shy’s warm light.

Our Take:

This whole time I’ve been watching I know that this is a superhero show but there have been a few times it hasn’t really felt like one. This episode it FELT like one but it also had a bunch of anime tropes. I’m not sure how we were able to see Spirit’s mom’s memories but that was some typical anime stuff. It also made me really sad because I lost my mother when I was younger and we sometimes struggled with money so seeing what happened with Letana was rough. Spirit never got the chance to try cake and Letana managed to get her a slice but on the way home she was robbed and the robber pushed her into the frozen river, that’s how she died. It was so sad that it probably makes my short list anime deaths.

Tragic backstory aside, she is still a villain now and she needs to be stopped. Shy has really come into her own when it comes to mastering her fire-power. This episode had some of the most hype superhero scenes I’ve seen since My Hero Academia. This anime probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I’m enjoying it and this arc has been really interesting.
