English Dub Season Review: Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro Season One
Overview:
Every day, Naoto Hachiouji is teased relentlessly by Hayase Nagatoro, a first-year student he meets one day in the library while working on his manga. After reading his story and seeing his awkward demeanor, she decides from that moment on to toy with him, even calling him “Senpai” in lieu of using his real name.
Our Take:
Hey, would you look at that? “Senpai” actually has a name that I never would have known without some extra research. I knew he HAD to have a name but honestly thought he would always be “Senpai” even if they eventually got married or something. It really shows me how Nagatoro is, in the beginning at least.
There was a point when I was really looking forward to this anime. I started reading the manga a while back but eventually stopped because I wasn’t really a fan of the characters. If you feel similarly to me you should probably check out Teasing Master Takagi-san instead.
The animation for the show is decent at times but there are also a lot of cut corners. Like sometimes they don’t even animate the faces of characters. Sure they are minor background characters that have like two lines but it’s really noticeable in this. The voice actors do well. I think that Kimberly Anne Campbell sounds exactly like what I thought Nagatoro would sound like. Erik Kimerer does well as Senpai and actually can sound pretty weak and lame when he wants to.
To give credit where credit is due the relationship between the two leads does start to progress at a decent rate. You can tell they like each other and Senpai even stands up for Nagatoro on occasion. I just wish their relationship wasn’t that of the bully and bullied seemingly. There is a reason why they tweaked the title for English though, I have a feeling Please, Don’t Bully Me, Miss Nagatoro would not go over as well. I feel like this anime is just a slightly more adult worse version of Teasing Master Takagi-san. It’s not the worst but it’s not really all that great either.
