English Dub Review: Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department “An Unsophisticated Soul Tormented by Powers Unseen Succumbs to Brimming Anger and Yearning to Manifest as a Malevolent Beast”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Kuroitsu wants to create a special monster for Valentine’s Day, but Akashic repudiates her lack of a proper feminine mindset. And so, the chocolate-making class begins!
Our Take:
We’re about six episodes into this villainous yet kooky series, and we already have one involving the special time of the year: Valentine’s Day. This seems pretty odd considering that Valentine’s Day was last month, but hey, better late than never. Unfortunately, like the previous episodes, this holiday-themed plot takes up just the first half of the episode, with the Monster Development Department creating a chocolate-themed monster named Melty.
Fortunately, it isn’t without its share of comical moments. One of which involves Akashic training Kuroitsu and Wolf Bete to make their own chocolate, with the Agastia leader talking like a cooking show host. That moment further showcases the sheer bizarreness of the character regarding her personality, and I still couldn’t help but enjoy every minute of it. The other humorous scene happens in its conclusion, with Agastia finding out that the chocolate they bought had metal pieces in them, resulting in Melty being unsuited for battle against Blader. The fact that Agastia is always strict on their product’s quality, especially one made out of chocolate, shows how committed the writers are to providing enjoyment in this weird concept.
The episode’s second half involves a friendly monster match between Agastia and Black Lore. Wolf Bete and Hydra from Agastia battle against Hoen’s monsters that use psychological attacks, and the result is pretty much what I would expect regarding the humor. It’s more along the lines of a Hoen-focused segment, which offers a fresh change of pace for a series that only focuses on Agastia. Also, Mizuki serves as a henchman for another villain named Dark Crow. As usual, I do not see the point of these scenes other than to provide comedy.
Overall, this Valentine-themed episode of Miss Kuroitsu has enough sweets in its basket to fill your heart with glee. However, the fact that the show continues to provide its multi-segment approach for its episodes gave me a bit of a toothache. Regardless, it’s a decent late Valentine’s Day gift that I wouldn’t mind accepting. I also wouldn’t mind seeing Akashic hosting her own cooking show if her job as a villain doesn’t go well.
