English Dub Review: Chained Soldier “The Commander of the 2nd Squadron”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
When a Thunder God begins abducting women, the Demon Defense Force sends Mira and Kyouka to confront her.

Our Take:
Amid the Azuma Banquet, we’ve been seeing the Eight Thunder Gods commencing their new plan to defeat the Mato Defense Force for good.  As it turns out, part of their evil plan includes one of them, Kuusetsu, capturing almost every woman on Earth.  That certainly will not do for the all-female squad, prompting them to send the two best members to stop her: Kyouka and Mira, the commander of the 2nd Squadron.  Obviously, both of these commanders have a history together, as they’re both competing to achieve the Supreme Commander position.  Thankfully, this is more of a friendly rivalry than an all-out brawl between the commanders, which helps the episode avoid its usual tropes.
More importantly, it highlights Mira’s personality as a tough-as-nails yet honorable commander who shares the same goal as Kyouka: defeating the Shuuki.  Christie Guidry is a solid choice for conveying Mira’s personality in her vocal performance. However, the dub’s voice direction remains hit-or-miss in terms of the line deliveries, mostly the latter.  It’s not enough to derail this episode, which provided a serviceable start to their mission on Earth, but it is still noticeable in most places.  Of course, Mira is not safe from her own humorous insecurities, especially when she sees Kyouka naked in front of Yuuki.  It would be interesting to see how Mira would react when she ends up giving Yuuki a similar treatment. That is, if she can prevent Kuusetsu from raping Yuuki first.
