English Dub Review: Monster Girl Doctor “The Hedonistic Arachne”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Doctor Glenn finishes up his time in the harpy village with a wing grooming demonstration that winds up attracting a lot of fans. He and Sapphee are packing up to leave when Illy flies in with some strange sticky substance all over her body. It turns out to be some sort of webbing, and she isn’t the only one who has been affected by it. Glenn and Sapphee head into the woods to find the monster responsible.

It turns out to be none other than Arahnia, a spider creature who speaks with a Southern accent and just adores taking control of those she loves. Sapphee calls Arahnia her best friend, but isn’t surprised when the spider woman tries to kidnap Doctor Glenn and commit unspeakable acts with him. Tisalia manages to help save him, but all the trouble isn’t over, because apparently there are giants coming?

Our Take:

The seventh episode of Monster Girl Doctor is a welcome distraction from the usual monster girl examinations of the previous few weeks. Arahnia may be a total creep, but at least she’s interesting to watch, especially since she has a charming country accent. Doctor Glenn and Sapphee get a little closer thanks to the events of this week’s episode, and it looks like things are about to get even more crazy next week with the arrival of some new foes to conquer and/or examine.

It’s been a while now in the harpy village, so I’m excited that it’s past us now. Getting out of the city and away from the office was fun for a few episodes, but it’s high time that Glenn and Sapphee return to their clinic. The harpies are cool and all, but when they can’t even figure out that they need to simply bathe in order to get rid of the spider web attached to them, things get a little dumb. And really, do they need to know how to brush their own wing feathers?

Arahnia’s arrival in the episode is at first exciting, but turns scary relatively quickly. She’s a fashion designer in Lindworm and came to the harpy village under the guise of wanting to see Illy’s phoenix wings for inspiration for her next design — hence the web traps she put up all over the forest. It’s a little suspect from the start, but when we learn she and Sapphee are best friends, I thought things would be fine. But unfortunately, Sapphee doesn’t have the best judgement when it comes to friends.

The spider woman lies to the doctor about being unwell in order to get him to walk her into the forest. When he tries to return, she traps him in a sticky web and spills her evil plan to him. Essentially, she’s a clingy friend who wants to make sure that those she loves don’t leave her. She claims to want to make Glenn her own in order to ‘match’ with Sapphee, but it’s just as likely that she wants to get rid of him so Sapphee will return to her, in my opinion.

The good thing about this is that Sapphee’s feelings for Glenn end up being revealed. Not so much to the audience or any of the supporting characters, as they already know because it’s honestly pretty obvious. But to Doctor Glenn, this is a big deal. He apologizes for not realizing it sooner, but before they can really unpack what this means for their future, someone arrives with the news that giants are making thunderous sounds. I’m sure Glenn will readily volunteer to give some giants their physicals next week.
