English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “Bizarre! Gran Torino Appears”

We have officially set the table for the second half of the season.

Spoilers Below

Internships are officially in session and this week we get to see all of the different pro-heroes get their trainer. Izuku gets Gran Torino aka the same guy who once trained All Might and while he’s a little dude, we learn that his tactics in training are subversive and not typical of maybe some of the others. Before the end of the episode, Izuku learns all about how to control his Quirk so that it’s kind of on all the time, but not to the point of use…

Our Take

In other words, this week’s episode reminded me of key scenes of say Kill Bill where Kiddo had to get a sword from a swordsman that didn’t appear to be who he was at first as well as the scene where she had to learn Kung Fu from a master that taught more mind over power. And now, with the conclusion of the episode, Izuku basically harnesses his quirk to be similar to the way The Hulk works on The Avengers, more or less keeping his powers in “sleep mode” as opposed to completely off.

The character designs for this show might be some of the best in the world, right there next to Attack on Titan, and yeah, this was definitely an episode that sort of sets the stage for the second half of the season rather than REALLY provide any sort of conflict or action, but the producers make the obligatory episode way more fun than some of the other franchises.

My Hero Academia’s just in another class when it comes to presentation, storytelling, and drama and is continuing to show that it’s at the head of the pack right now for Funimation.
