Review: Adventure Time “Flute Spell” (S7Ep25)
Spoilers Below
This last episode of Adventure Time, “Flute Spell”, started out with me thinking it was going to be a Jake-heavy episode. However, the intro was just a segue into a story about Finn playing a flute with a girl (Huntress Wizard) in the woods. Huntress Wizard is kind of a whimsical, Zooey Deschanel-type character, who has leaf hair and turns into a log at night (?)
A very strange episode, as is always the case with AdTi, but to me, it felt a little disjointed. Definitely not the worst episode ever, but parts of it didn’t feel quite right. There were certainly laugh out loud spots. Some of Jake’s reactions to what he kept insisting was a romance between Finn and Huntress Wizard were pretty funny, and the the strange video games of Ooo that Jake was playing (that he was also playing with Finn at the end of the episode) created kind of a cool cycle of continuity.
However, Huntress Wizard’s character felt kind of thrown together, and the other random trippy elements sometimes feel very forced (Science Cat, the spirit of the woods)– I never know which are recurring characters, and which are just pulled out of a hat– weird for the sake of weird?
Come to think of it, it was pretty funny when Finn and Huntress Wizard hunt down a boar and it tells them they could have just asked for his tusk, which immediately grew right back. Some cool art with the boar, too, who resembled a disintegrating cloud.
Overall, I’ve seen better, but many fans of AdTi will probably like this one, with an intro with a kinda funny song from Jake, and the whole Jake-Finn-and-love-interest dynamic.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
