Review: Uncle Grandpa ‘Big in Japan’

Don’t make Gus angry…actually he’s hysterical when he’s angry.

Spoilers Below

Grandpa’s in Japan where he runs into Akira whom is filming an action-packed giant monster movie and Uncle Grandpa wants to help out. Gus volunteers as the monster, but Grandpa has to make him really big to look scary. Problem is, Gus is trying to act his heart out, but the rest of the crew is just trying to get him to be more monstery for the sake of the film. Grandpa helps out in that department and Akira is in love with all of the footage he is getting but during the death scene Gus may have been really killed. After everyone gives their eulogies we learn that Gus was just acting and he actually wakes up during his own funeral leading everyone to thinks he is a zombie. Thankfully,  Gus survives long enough for his premier.

Slice of life with Pizza Steve

Steve keeps trying to change Gus’ channel while he is driving and listening to the radio. After a bunch of arguing, Gus gives up and makes Steve drive, but he sends the van into a tree.

I thoroughly enjoy Gus’ monster moments as it helps remind us that show creator Peter Browngardt has some of THE best monster designs in the business if not THE best. This week’s episode goes back to the Uncle Grandpa original formula after a couple weeks of trying other things, but that just shows how fresh the series still is. There really isn’t any monotony and the added shorts on the end help keep the viewers on their toes all the while laughing their pants off. Pizza Steve is also really, really strong this episode especially in the short as he continues to climb the ranks as the biggest pain in the ass in cartoons probably in the industry. Not only is Uncle Grandpa big in Japan, but it’s getting bigger here in the States.
