English Dub Review: Tougen Anki “Children of Kishin”

Overview:

Hina begins at Momotaro Agency Headquarters as Shiki’s battle continues.

Our Take:

Another way this is like a typical shonen is the fact that this one arc and battle has taken a multitude of episodes. It feels like we’ve been at this shrine seeing Shiki and friends battle the Momotaro since the third episode or so. I’ll be honest, I can’t remember spending so long on one battle since my Dragonball Z watching days. But one positive I saw was that I liked getting to see Shiki get a new power, sure, it’s a little early, but that might be what this series needs to get me to reinvest.

Kishin was one of the original Oni, and every generation, he has a decent number of children. I don’t know if they mean descendants or what, but it seems that Shiki is one of those children. What separates the children of Kishin from other Oni is their ability to use “Anki”. From what I can tell, Anki is a power linked to an elemental affinity. In this case, Shiki has the element of fire, and when he activates, I must admit he looks badass. I’m more excited about the implication that there are other Anki users out there, and I want to meet them. If we’re only getting twelve episodes, I think I’ll be disappointed, but I can’t find a confirmed episode count, so maybe we will get twenty-four, and if so, then we might be in business.
