Sounds like negotiations for Lela Lee and Mnet hit a snag for ‘Angry Little Girls’ animated series

And yea it is getting ugly. UUUUUUUGLY.

I’m actually a bit disappointed because I really wanted to see this show come to life and was really looking forward to covering it. However, according to the Facebook page for Angry Little Girls creator Lela Lee’s negotiations with Mnet America have hit a bit of a snag. I first got wind of this on Tuesday when she had posted, “You cannot negotiate with people who say what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is negotiable.” Which sounds like to me is all about copyrights and the fact that in Lela’s pending contract rights of the characters revert to the network even if the show sees cancellation. This is actually pretty similar to what the Cyanide and Happiness guys were going through in their negotiations while presenting their comics to Comedy Central so this isn’t an unheard of practice.

Lela Lee then would post up this message on the Angry Little Girls Facebook page: Hi Readers, For too many months, I’ve been dragged through some nasty negotiations. Last week, I asked if there was such a thing as karma. There is. CJ, Mnet America’s parent company is in a lot of hot water. Just google “CJ Probe.” I also drew these comics based on my experiences with them. Alas, she is correct, when you Google CJ the first article that pops up is an investigation into the parent company of Mnet mis-handling funds as they pertain to off-shore accounts. You can read all about that here.

This stinks for us the fans who really wanted to see the series come to life and when Margaret Cho came on board this sounded like it would certainly happen. However, as a lot of independent artists are learning, negotiating with networks is an art. That’s  why whenever sends me emails or Facebook messages asking me how to break in, first thing I say is “Hire an agent”.  Looks like the start date of sometime in June for Angry Little Girls is not happening.
