Season Review: Squidbillies Season 12
It’s very rare that you get an animated series that gets better after 12 seasons. Most of your idiot fans of The Simpsons will claim that the show hasn’t been good since after the 10th season, ditto for efforts from Family Guy, South Park, and others. And while the results are up for debate on social networks for years to come, there’s no debate on this one. Squidbillies Season 12 is a stellar effort and is quite deserving of it’s already picked up 13th season.
For those that don’t know, Squidbillies follows the Cuyler family based out of Georgia, an endangered species that is protected by a grizzly Sheriff and his Deputy. The show is produced by Awesome Inc and features the voice likenesses of Unknown Hinson (Early), Dana Snyder (Granny), Daniel McDevitt (Rusty), and a slew of other names that sleuth around the area. The premises for Season 12 aren’t revolutionary in their conception, typically your standard bits about Early trying to get rich, but every once-in-a-while we’ll get some gems from Dan Halen (voiced by Todd Hanson) or the aforementioned police force. Most of the value of this franchise comes in its execution and it’s here where the show really shines.
The Jim Fortier/Dave Willis joint has always been known for it’s slippery and slimy delivery in its gags and jokes, but this season I really felt like the production value has seen its ante upped quite a bit in the presentation department. Archer-like cop chases, ultra-violent and well-produced fight scenes (most specifically in “Events By Russell” episode which was exquisite), gives us an increasingly rewarding experience even after additional watches.
I most appreciate when Squidbillies goes 30-minutes with it’s run times, and with Adult Swim looking for more serious efforts from this space, this show might already be best-equipped to do just that.
