Review: Steven Universe “Made of Honor”

You’re cordially invited to this newest episode!

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

As it turns out, The Question that Ruby asked Sapphire was a marriage proposal to redefine their relationship. And to consummate their marriage, they’ll fuse back into Garnet before everyone to seal the deal. As they further plan out their wedding, Sapphire has a minor prediction that feels like subtle foreshadowing, while Steven realizes there isn’t really a lot of people to invite at their wedding which results in him un-bubbling the Gem Blacksmith named “Bismuth” (Voiced by Uzo Aduba) to make her a “Plus-1” for this momentous occasion. After a mildly comedic scene where he fills Bismuth in on everything that’s happened including the big Reveal about Rose.

While Bismuth herself is happy to be free from the bubble imprisonment and forgiven by Steven, It isn’t without its obstacles when she remains apprehensive given that her last encounter with Steven was a very unpleasant one, to say the least… Much of the episode devote’s it’s running time to Bismuth questioning whether or not she still has a place among the Crystal Gems, along with wondering why the Gems should even still be a team after spending thousands of years fighting for a leader who consistently lied to them about who she really was.

Strangely enough, Bismuth also seems to acknowledge Steven as a leader more than Garnet since they all seem to hold his word with high-regard in Garnet’s absence but of course, Steven doesn’t see himself as one. Eventually when Steven finally talks things out with her. The episode ends on a lighthearted note when all the Gems express excitement to see Bismuth again, with her wedding present for the two. And given Bismuth’s blacksmithing skills, it kinda makes sense as it’s a something that no wedding should be without.

Our Take

It’s kinda refreshing to see Bismith again who’s last appearance was the 100th episode special. I’m also kinda happy she isn’t as angry or rabidly fanatical as she was in her last appearance on the show. The episode’s title itself you could say had a double-meaning as Steven wants Bismuth to be a Maid of honor, yet Bismith herself considers herself highly principled because of the material she’s made from which she considers as her own definition of honor.

At this point, there’s no telling what will happen next given that we now have one episode left before their big wedding. And judging from the promotional material, it’s going to be a big half-hour event which should emphasize the level of importance this will have for future episodes.
