Review: Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel

THOR, FERB, PHINEAS, HULK, SPIDER-MAN, PERRY THE PLATYPUS, IRON MAN

 Spoilers Below

First thing’s first, the musical intro should stay and replace the Bowling with Soup piece of shit we get now. But, yea the show opens with Phineas, Ferb, and the gang all doing their best Silver Surfer impressions in space. The kids head back to Danville, but where’s Perry?

Doof wants to take the powers belonging to his brother so that he can be the best mayor ever. Like normal, Perry destroys the -inator, but the machine goes off, hits Phineas and Ferb’s satellite, and beams into NYC where we see Spidey and the Avengers taking on Whiplash and Venom, MODOK shows up with Red Skull, but they all are about to get taken off, but when the heroes get zapped all of their powers get zapped. When the guys return to their ship, Fury tells them all about what happened. Doof hears about it too while watching the news and decides to blog all about it over the net. The villains read all about Doof and feeling inspired the crew decides to visit Doof…personally. When they get to Doof Inc, the villains inquire about Doof’s inators. However, the villains aren’t the only ones visiting as the Avengers decide to drop by Phineas and Ferb’s.

Candace nearly feints at the sight of the heroes, but the Major and Nick Fury decide to fill Perry in on what’s been going down. The villains are getting a tour through Doof Inc, but they start getting upset by the fact that the machine they want was destroyed by Perry. As a result, the villains order Doof to rebuild the machine. Meanwhile, Phineas and Ferb show the heroes their secret HQ, but Candace is star struck to the point that she’s out of control. Phineas and Ferb attempt to temporarily give the Marvel heroes their powers, but Candace screws it up and everyone’s powers get mixed up. Phineas gets pissed and he YELLS at Candace! That’s right, he tells Candace to leave the premises. The news comes on, and the heroes hear about the villains terrorizing the local mall, so they bring along Phineas and Ferb in their new suit, and crash the party. Problem is no one is really liking their powers switched up, and Phineas and Ferb’s suit gets taken out of commission. From the looks of it, our heroes are SCREWED!

Just when it looks like the heroes are destroyed, PERRY shows up rocking his hero suit and saves everyone! The heroes get dropped off back at S.H.E.D. and the heroes’ powers slip away, but Candace screws up again and gives Baljeet Hulk’s powers. Phineas yells at Candace again, and boy does he rip into her. Perry heads to Doof Inc where find that the villains decide to trap Doof with intentions to destroy Danville. The girls are depressed because there isn’t any woman super heroes, but Perry’s been caught and Baljeet’s tearing up downtown so we have bigger fish to fry. Thankfully, Buford shows up and he actually calms Baljeet down, but of course he pisses him off again and Baljeet turns into Hulk again. The villains then decide to enhance Doof’s inator in an attempt to lure the heroes in another battle. The heroes, without their powers, decide to get into the fight.

Candace tries to apologize to her brothers whom are in a hurry bcause they have to save the now captured Marvel heroes. Perry uses some wire cutters and starts to make his escape and Phineas and Ferb are able to fix their suit and join the battle. Hulk-jeet shows up and makes a save, Doof starts to shoot up the villains with waffles, and business starts to pick up becase Perry’s here! A big fight ensues, but Isabella and Candace head up to the Phineas and Ferb space station to look into getting some energy. Candace presses the red button and the space ship falls, but Doof is trying to help out by pitching in with some new hardware, but is having no such luck.

Candace crash lands and crushes the villains and is able to get the heroes their powers back, and battle #2 commences and its not even a fair fight, the heroes WRECK the villains. However, Candace and Phineas say their sorries and are cool now, well that is until the big sis catches Lynn just walking around. By the time she gets over there, the heroes take off, and no one pays attention to Doof. The kids run into Ducky Momo…or do they?

Since the Disney/Marvel merger I would think Disney’s take on Marvel franchises have been mixed at best. Maybe not in terms of money, but when it comes to how their characters are portrayed Disney knows how to fuck up details that may not be HUGE but are rather large enough and annoying that could ruin the experience. Recent example of this? Iron Man 3. Have you ever read ANY comics with the Mandarin in it? I’m not going to spoil details for those whom haven’t seen Disney’s latest Marvel film, but let’s just say THEY FUCK HIM UP!

Alas, that is my major gripe with Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel amid all of the plot holes. For example, if there is a machine that takes powers away it shouldn’t have really been an issue for either Iron Man and Hulk should’ve reacted differently. Here’s what I mean, Iron Man is in a suit. He isn’t a mutant and he really doesn’t even have super powers akin to say a Superman. Rather his power is derived from a suit that HE built. So, if Iron Man were to be zapped with a machine that takes powers away he should have been just as able to get out of one suit and go into another one. And yea I know he was ‘frozen’ but really that was kind of silly, too and in either case he regained his mobility and could have just as easily had Fury fly him a new suit or fuck it why not call War Machine? As for the Hulk, if he were to get zapped and had his powers taken away, wouldn’t he be turned into Bruce Banner?

Also lets talk about the selection of heroes/villains. Whiplash I liked, Venom I liked, but if you are going to put in Red Skull, wouldn’t you insert Captain America SOMEWHERE into the script?  M.O.D.O.K. was brilliant, bar none. Also, I happen to agree with Isabella and Candace in that where was the lack of female super villains/heroes??

With all of the holes from the start of the episode, did it affect the show? No, at the end of the day this is a Marvel mash-up with Phineas and Ferb and it was a lot of fun. For starters we had a bunch of funny one-liners and inside jokes on both the heroes and the villains and yea it was pretty great. For example, M.O.D.O.K. not fitting through doors…who else would have thought of that?  Or even better was the Howard the Duck joke near the end with Iron Man almost interrupting EVERYTHING to make sure everyone knew what he was about to say. Perry and Doof were both fabulous in the special as well, with Doof being a part of the funniest musical montage I have ever seen. Seriously, you haven’t lived til you  have seen Venom prancing around a flower garden and Whiplash stealing vacuum bags from old ladies. OH, OH! What about when the Avengers are all drinking apple juice while talking to Phineas and Ferb…CLASSIC! Also to see Phineas get rather upset with Candace was surprising and interesting at the same time, offering up a different side to the titular hero like you have never seen before.

Another MAJOR win for this special is the fight choreography. There are definitely some homages to The Avengers movie littered throughout bout huge battles, but that only added to the really cool department. But, seeing as how villains like M.O.D.O.K and Venom as well as heroes like Spider-Man really were not a part of The Avengers film, there was no template that could have been used, so kudos to the choreographers for strumming along rather symphonic battle sequences.

So, did Disney screw up more Marvel franchises? Again, the result is mixed, but with the over riding jokes and the overall good time the writers had with putting this together, the special certainly lived up to its billing…
