Review: Hot Streets “Nursery Rhyme Land” ; “Operation: Large and in Charge”

A big house. Five cars, You’re in charge.

Overview( Spoilers Below)

“Nursery Rhyme Land”

When French plays the B-side of a record, it opens a portal to Hot Cross Buns which is kinda like an Oz-like world ran by a King that employs a humanoid cat that forces French to do sexy dances. Branski, Jen, and Chubbie head in after him via the A-side in “Nursery Rhyme Land” which is run by three blind mice who offer a portal to get French after everyone completes menial tasks. Two of the three, I guess, contestants pass and head into “Hot Cross Buns” to save French, kill the King, and head back home. Branski takes a bit of convincing at first because during the course of his travels he turned into a bunny, but eventually, Jen’s quick thinking gets him back.

“Operation: Large and in Charge”

French volunteers to have his heart removed so that he can have implanted a device that makes him big enough to battle a huge kaiju named Blozark that is running amok downtown and shitting on all those who oppose him. French is able to use his head, but figuratively and literally to win out but when the time comes to put French’s heart back in?

Jen’s getting a tour of the company that helped grow French for his battle for a potential job when she discovers that Chubbie has eaten French’s heart. Fortunately, there’s a bison heart nearby and it fits perfect for French and is good for night jogging.

Our Take

Channel 101 fans are gonna go ga-ga over the “Nursery Rhyme Land” shout-out, but I would’ve liked to have spent a bit more time in the Hot Cross Buns world to see if these producers can get into the demonic levels of what Superjail and Mr. Pickles could muster. Branski running around as a bunny decapitating people might have been the funniest thing I’ve seen all season had it not been for Chubbie’s bit which is far more disturbing and I loved every minute of it.

“Operation” was a bit more cliche, it’s a premise we’ve seen before, but I think if we had less of Jen’s tour and more choreography in the fight between French and Blozark I would’ve liked it better. That Blozark was crazy, too, but because of the B-plot, I couldn’t appreciate the battle as much. This was also the first time, possibly aside from nearly marrying a mummy, where Jen showed quite a bit of susceptibility which is usually an arena more than filled up by our guys, and in the “Nursery Rhyme Land” she was almost the non-factor in terms of importance. Probably one of the major flaws of Hot Streets is the amount of screen time per character has its ebbs and flows and this week that was most on display for the lack of Jen. In “Operation”, she was an important part of the climax, but the road to get there seemed almost TOO contrived.

Perhaps 22-minute episodes aren’t a bad idea….
