The Great North may have already wrapped up its first season, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of things to talk about regarding one of FOX’s newest animated series. Creators and execute producers Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux joined executive producer Loren Bouchard along with cast members Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, Dulcé Sloan, Will Forte, Paul Rust, and Alanis Morissette at this years Comic Con @ Home panel.

The group started out by discussing the pandemic and everyone’s initial experiences with how it affected working on the show. The quarantine officially began during production of the first season, which means things had to change a lot for the show staff and cast. The first time they did a table read on Zoom was actually for the season one finale, which was a lot different than the usual in-person cast live reading. Dulcé actually enjoyed the virtual reads more than the typical scenario, since she calls in from New York. At least this way she got to see everyone on video and participate more fully in the process!

All of season two has been produced remotely, so the cast and crew discussed what that has been like as they move forward. For Jenny, the voice of Judy, it has meant a lot of embarrassment as she records in a pillow fort underneath her dining room table. Will Forte also had a rough time of it, as he was in New Zealand shooting a live action show during his recording for season two and the Wi-Fi on the top floor of the hotel he stayed at was not ideal. Later on, he moved to a closet, but eventually found out it also housed black mold. Despite all the strange troubles of recording remotely, Loren confirmed that everyone has been sounding great and pulling together in these trying times.

Paul Rust was asked about his experience playing a queer teen in the family, as well as what the reactions from fans have been like. He said that it’s been a blast, and there has been a lot of positive messages from fans of the show and the character online. Dulcé also chimed in to comment that she’s gotten to have a lot of fun playing the character of Honeybee as she blends into a family that doesn’t look like her.
