The Simpsons Are Going Full Noir: What to Expect from Disney+’s Upcoming “Simpsley” Special
America’s favorite animated family is getting a dark, cinematic makeover this summer. Disney+ has released the official trailer for “Simpsley,” an upcoming special that drops The Simpsons into a stylized, moody world of mid-century film noir.
The special is part of a trio of standalone summer episodes releasing on the streaming platform between June and August. If you’ve ever wondered what Springfield would look like with deep shadows, high-stakes deception, and a heavy dose of Italian intrigue, “Simpsley” is aiming to deliver just that when it premieres on July 3rd.
A Tale of Lies, Lust, and Italian Lira
“Simpsley” takes the familiar cast and completely reshapes their dynamics into a classic dramatic thriller format, heavily drawing inspiration from classic psychological thrillers (think The Talented Mr. Ripley).
According to the official synopsis, the episode follows a penniless con-artist version of Marge Bouvier. She is dispatched to Italy with a mission: convince a wealthy, gullible Seymour Skinner to return home. Once she arrives, however, the allure of Skinner’s lavish, affluent lifestyle proves incredibly tempting.
Of course, no con goes smoothly. The massive “fly in the ointment” arrives in the form of Homer Simpsley—Skinner’s incredibly clingy, dim-witted, and mooching houseguest. The trailer promises a stylishly animated ride filled with betrayal, romance, and plenty of vintage flair.
The Three-Part Summer Lineup
“Simpsley” isn’t the only unique experiment Disney+ is rolling out for The Simpsons over the summer months. The platform is using these exclusive streaming blocks to play with different genres and formats outside of the main series’ continuity:
-
“Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition” (Aired June 17th): The summer kicked off with a couples’ date night gone wrong. After Marge catches Homer leaving the kids home alone with only a doorbell camera to supervise them, a tipsy Marge fantasizes a trilogy of alternate realities featuring vastly different versions of her husband. This double-length special also featured guest stars Betty Gilpin, Laufey, and Tegan and Sara.
-
“Simpsley” (July 3rd): The aforementioned European noir crime thriller.
-
“Yellow Mirror” (August 26th): Rounding out the summer is a clear, sci-fi-infused homage to Black Mirror. This special features two bizarre, darker tales: one where a defective lamp shatters Homer’s perception of reality, and another where an AI-powered tablet befriends—and begins to control—baby Maggie.
Where to Watch
By stepping away from standard sitcom storytelling, these specials allow the creative team to push the boundaries of animation style and tone. Catch The Simpsons: Simpsley when it streams exclusively on Disney+ starting July 3rd.
