English Dub Review: The Ramparts of Ice “Bombshell”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Unsure of how to move forward, Miki avoids Yota and confides in her colleagues.  A bold Momoka confronts Koyuki about Minato and lights a fuse.

Our Take:
After Miki realized her friendship with Yota in the last episode, the title for the season finale seemed somewhat appropriate for this occasion.  This is because the characters’ friendship is getting pretty close to blowing up, as their contained genuine feelings drive them crazy.  It also doesn’t help that the minor “incident” between Miki and Yota led the former to take Koyuki’s approach and avoid him.  As a result, the episode goes through similar motions to what Koyuki went through, only with Miki feeling unsure about her own feelings with Yota.  Understandably, it makes me want to reach out and yell, “Just go for it!”  At the same time, I admire the show for exploring the characters’ complexities as they face change, especially when it comes to love.
It’s easy to be friends with those you care about, but when they open up their genuine feelings, it can be pretty difficult to express your own back in fear of “ruining” that friendship.  Fortunately, the season finale showed that Miki may have finally conquered that fear when Yota confessed to her, providing a satisfying (and often humorous) closure to their arc.  As for Koyuki and Minato, they’re still at that awkward phase as always, especially when Momoka is around.  This will likely serve as the basis for a potential second season, which hasn’t been announced yet.  Quite a shame, given how much the series has grown on me since episode one.  Until then, I’m mostly satisfied with how the first season concluded.
