English Dub Review: Hana-Kimi “I’m So Happy!”

Overview:

Somehow Nakatsu faints and Mizuki’s dress gets ruined at the ball. Can she still dance with Sano?

Our Take(Spoilers):

We’ve spent most of the last few episodes building up to this dance and that was it? It felt like it was over nearly as soon as it began. I have no experience with the manga but this seemed like it was supposed to be a big turning point in the story and it didn’t end up feeling that way. There were a few things that happened that were left in the air. There was a point where someone spilled something on Mizuki’s dress on purpose and it wasn’t really addressed. We, as the audience, knew who did it but typically in a show like this there would be more pursuit of who did that.

Then there was the situation with Nakatsu. I know that the nosebleed when you’re turned on trope is a big anime thing. Ya know what I’m curious, hold please… okay I’m back. Apparently, the nosebleed trope comes from a Japanese wives tale that when you’re aroused you’re blood pressure and hormones spike so fast that you get a nosebleed. I’ve never had that happen but Google also says that Japanese people supposedly have thinner blood vessels in their nose. I don’t know if I buy that but hey that’s what the internet says.

I’m sorry I didn’t plan on spending that much time talking about that but if anything that proves my point about this episode. Nakatsu got aroused by another girl and got a nosebleed so bad that he fainted and wasn’t able to dance with Mizuki. As far as reasons to get rid of Nakatsu so that Sano and Mizuki could dance I suppose there are worse ones.

This was the season two finale and it left a lot to be desired. I’ve made no secret of the fact that this show is pretty meh to me. I know that there are some stories that stand the test of time with some minor tweaks to it. I recently watched Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and as you might have guessed it’s based on the book The Count of Monte Cristo which came out in 1844. Somehow that’s still a relevant story but Hana Kimi feels like a time capsule that I’m disappointed to open because I realize how cringey I was back in high school.
