English Dub Review: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – Northern War “The Scent of Wheat Ears and the Silver of Revival”

Overview:

Lavi, with a gunshot wound, barely escapes with her life and heads home to the countryside, where her mother nurses her back to health. There, she learns about the villagers’ love for the much-maligned Vlad, her grandfather, and recalls what he said to her about heroes.

Our Take:

Sometimes you just need a gunshot to the stomach to get you back in touch with your mother and your roots. At least I hear it’s a good way and I mean it worked for Lavi right? But seriously we even got flashbacks to Lavi’s legendary grandfather and now she seems ready to take up the mantle of hero. She has reunited with some of her team and now… well I don’t know to be honest because this has been kind of hard to follow. It’s all been leading to one game event that I was hoping would have already happened but maybe that is an episode or two.

The animation and voice work has been good and I really do love this universe but this just hasn’t been what I expected. Perhaps it will have a strong finish and I hope it does. The world-building of this series is some of the best I’ve experienced in any medium, not just anime. Here’s to hoping the next few episodes nail the landing.
