Blu-Ray Review: Anomalisa

You may think that three featurettes just isn’t enough to warrant a purchase of a Blu-Ray nowadays, but you would be foolish to miss out on what’s featured here.

None of Them Are You: Crafting Anomalisa

For those out there that put in money for the production of this film as part of Anomalisa’s KickStarter that happened a couple of years ago and are wondering why they had to in the first place, watch this. Patrons would be interested to learn just how close this movie was to not being made in the first place. Why? Well, this featurette definitely goes into good detail as to just how pain-staking it is to animate even just a few frames at a time. Simple gestures take up to a couple of months to produce, and that doesn’t take into account environmental influences. And a HOLE IN THE ROOF! A hole in the roof during a rain storm on top of stages that some team had to take months to put together. Dear lord, can you imagine? I don’t have the fucking patience to do some of the jobs that are done by this production staff, and I’m pretty sure I would have flipped out if someone rained on my work. The movie probably didn’t even provide a good ROI on the production of the feature, make no mistake, Anomalisa became a labor of love.

Intimacy in Miniature

Stop-mo fucking at it’s finest! Really, no matter which way it’s presented, at the end of the day we got some puppet porn out of this whole deal. So how was it made? For those who had watched Team America: World Police, Anomalisa’s presentation was a way heavier undertaking from a production point of view.

The Sound of Unease

A short on how the audio production is put together for Anomalisa. This may have been the easiest part of the film, but that’s coming from a guy whose best talent is making fart noises via my mouth.

Our Take

Overall, Anomalisa on Blu-Ray is a very good buy. What the release lacks in special features makes up for it in quality. If for no other reason, check out the “Crafting Anomalisa” special is worth the price of admission.
