Review: The Rolling Girls “Dream”

TRG ep 4.

You may notice, that when a show shoves a whole story into an episode, it seems rushed, and that you’re missing something. It happened last week in Naruto Shippuden, when the writers put a whole story into a full episode, and there was a lot that felt like there was going to be something missing. “Dream,” this week’s episode of The Rolling Girls, is a perfect example to show how to spread a story across two episodes.

Nothing felt out of place here. I followed both episodes as if it was one, and it was a pretty fun story. Nothing left out, rushed, or cut. There was even a scene where Aki found the group Nozomi and crew, and apologized. She does play a somewhat cruel joke later on her assistant, Noriko, by making her take over as the Captain. I am finding the story taking an even cuter turn, because the focus is shying away from the overpowered Bests of each prefecture.

That said, my radar is pinging whenever Chiyaya is talking, because I think she’s up to something.  I don’t find it likely that she’s collecting these heart stones, yet doesn’t even know that they contain power. Oh, she gives them away, but doesn’t mean that she can’t get them back whenever she wants them. I just find it pretty convenient. And then, her mother is collecting them too, so it looks like I have my possible smoking gun for later.

Now that the girls are driving away from Always Comima, I can talk about the ending of the episode a bit. If there was something I can pick apart, it’s the “bombing.” The whole reason why Noriko becomes the new Captain is because she lied about the bombings.  On top of it, the group that brought in that silly fake cleaning robot that turned out to be a bomb itself, were made out to look like they were these bombers, even though they had nothing to do with it. It only took the girl in this group to realize that they got a bomb instead to pull things forward.

I think I may actually miss Always Comima, because I am actually a little fascinated with the city that is always cosplaying. Don’t think for a second I am ever going down that deep hole, but it’s odd to me. With what I think is a limited series, it’s great to see the story moving along at the pace it has so far. The Rolling Girls has probably the best pacing that I’ve seen in an anime so far, and it’s becoming one of my more favorable shows. “Dream” does a great job in keeping the show going on it’s current path, both as a show, and what has made the show so great so far.
