JOHN “ON THE SPOT” IGN REPORTS RENEWALS FOR FOX ANIMATION DOMINATION!

IGN.COM has released their list of 2012 “Endangered TV Series List” and they talk about which animated series from FOX are getting renewed or cancelled and also which ones are on the fence. After the jump, get my thoughts on the different animated series in each category, plus do I think Napoleon Dynamite will come back?

IGN.com is reporting the following Animation Domination series are returning to FOX are renewed and are returning next season:

The Simpsons

Obviously, this is FOX’s heavy weight and even though it was a very tumultuous year for us Simpsons fans wondering if this show was coming back or not, luckily it is and we’ve already been getting reports on guest stars like Steve Carrell. In my opinion it makes perfect sense to keep the show coming back as 2011 was a strong year from a show quality stand point, and 2012 overall has been pretty good. This is one of FOX’s biggest moneymakers and it’s not going anywhere for at least a couple seasons.

Family Guy

Even though Seth scared the shit out of me about wanting to put this one down, rumors have it has coming back for another four seasons. And rightfully so, I think its still great and has had a strong 2011 and 2012 is already on the up and up and even though some fans complain that the show is changing, I think its moving in the right direction. Obviously, we love the cutaway gags as much as the next person, but some of the most popular episodes in Family Guy’s history are the “Road To” series featuring just Brian and Stewie and those episodes very seldom have any cutaway gags and are typically really good, showing Family Guy can certainly modernize with the times as it leaves some of is old-school gags behind. And as luck would have it, this show is just as controversial as ever and is regularly harassed on CNN and all those sites, but fuck them. Looking at the rating from last weekend, Family Guy isn’t moving.

The Cleveland Show

If you had told me that this show was coming back a year ago , I would’ve laughed in your face. Season 2 was pretty boring and I think the ratings reflected that for a while, but for whatever reason Season 3 has been pretty good. Yes, there have been some bad eggs along the way, but overall this show has been getting better. Also, with the recent introduction of Junior’s wife Cecilia, and her Mexican family we have fresh new faces and story lines that I think will be somewhat similar to what we get with that show ROB! on CBS. Is that a bad thing? No, it’s definitely not the most original show on TV, but we knew that from day 1 because at the end of the day it is a spinoff which in this industry can be a dirty word, especially in animated shows…however from the looks of it, Cleveland’s starting to find his groove, and if the last two episodes are of any indication, I’m in.

American Dad

Wow…American Dad is coming back for a Season 8. Who knew? When Season 7 started I throw this show in the shitter, because the opening episode was so piss poor I couldn’t even breathe. But, then we had the crossover episode, and American Dad came out on top and showed that even if its not the most popular of Seth MacFarlane’s three animated shows, it definitely has the chops to be the best! The ratings have been a bit more consistent this year than last, and of all the shows on Animation Domination besides The Simpsons, its the only one that doesn’t HAVE to rely on its two most popular characters(Stan and Roger) that it can give some to Steve and others still be fine. This show has a very hardcore audience, and I’m glad to see it’s coming back!

IGN.com says this show is NOT coming back next season

Allen Gregory

This show started out alright and had a couple of decent episodes, but overall this one was doomed to fail. My question is, how many actors get nominated for an Academy Award, but also gets a cancelled animated show?  Part of me would have like to seen this show do a few episodes when no football is on as their were a lot of great/high ratings games this year and Allen had to go up against everyone of them, whereas Napoleon Dynamite premiered on the back end of the NFL season where we pretty much know which teams are contenders and which teams are pretenders. In any case, Jonah Hill is a very talented dude, and I bet we seem him do more guest spots on The Simpsons for now, he will have to settle for being in movies with Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, and Seth Rogen.

Napoleon Dynamite

I think this show DOES come back next season, but it will split time with Bob’s Burgers. Having said that, this show has had pretty strong ratings, but as I just mentioned with Allen Gregory I wonder how much of that is dependent on the back end of the NFL football schedule. Overall, I think this show has a lot going for it, but I am worried about it going to the well of Napoleon Dynamite movie jokes one too many times. From the looks of things, Mike Scully has this thing in the right direction, constantly reminding people that this IS an animated series and not a film and I do think a lot of the characters have translated pretty well so far and that’s why I believe it will get the second season. However, I will be curious to see where they put this one, Bob’s and whatever other animated shows FOX brings the table on the lineup schedule. I couldn’t help but notice that this past weekend FOX started Animation Domination @ 7:30pm EST with brand-new episodes, which I love! But obviously during the NFL season we have the games plus the terrible OT show afterwards so that might only work from January through May when Anidom starts winding down for the summer. Should be interesting to see…sound off below on which animated shows YOU want on Sunday nights.
