English Dub Review: Saga of Tanya The Evil “A Strange Friendship”

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, this installment takes a more political and strategic approach, putting much more emphasis on conversations and military planning than outright action. Despite the slower pace, I never felt the episode dragged, as the dialogue steadily builds tension and gives the characters plenty of room to discuss the realities of war. Tanya’s perspective remains especially entertaining, particularly as her usual blunt and calculating personality clashes with the more diplomatic direction of the episode.

The rest of the proceedings also does a good job exploring ideas of friendship, loyalty, morale, and the importance of understanding an opponent’s motivations. While there isn’t nearly as much action as in this current episode, the quieter scenes still have plenty of personality thanks to the character expressions, voice acting, atmosphere, and strong visual direction. The presentation gives even the more dialogue-heavy moments enough weight to remain engaging.

Overall, this was a slower but solid episode that continues setting up the season while giving the series a chance to explore its political and strategic side. The new OP is energetic and packed with striking imagery, while the ED hasn’t quite had the same immediate impact as the first season’s music for me. Still, both fit the tone of the new season well, and the episode itself provides an enjoyable change of pace without abandoning what makes Tanya such a fun character to watch.
