English Dub Review: Goodbye, Lara “Goodbye, Lara”
Overview:
Lara must pierce the one she loves. The only one who comes to mind is Mari.
Our Take(Spoilers):
You might be thinking “It’s happening! They’re commiting to the show being yuri!” Let me soften the blow for you… it’s complicated. The term “love” is thrown around a lot but as we’ve all learned, that doesn’t necessarily mean romantic. But as you might come to learn as you read this review, trying to make sense of what happened this episode is going to be a tall task that I’m not sure I’m up for. This show is definitely worth talking about but there are some things I wish were different.
I would say one of the things that are tough to swallow from this episode is the fact that I feel like somehow I didn’t learn a lesson I was supposed to. It’s hard to explain because there’s no way to know what you don’t know. But I thought that this show would go one of two ways. Either it would go in the “love yourself first and love doesn’t always need to be romantic” route or the yuri route. I suppose we could also mention that Mari’s relative seemed interested in Lara so that was technically an option. But what we got was none of this in my eyes, unless I missed something.
I’d also like to spend a little bit of time talking about Grace. She’s the witch that we’ve grown to love and has also been doubling as Mari’s pet fish. The problem with Grace is that it feels like we have no idea what happened. I think it’s safe to assume that she died or something but the fact that we got no closure or explanation about it is kind of disappointing. Which almost seems like the best word to describe this show.
The last episode ended with Rowan slicing at Lara and somehow turning her back into a mermaid. Lara seemed to accept something about herself and started to look like Grace when she started to turn into the witch. Maybe that was to be Lara’s fate as well until Mari showed up. That’s the thing, I don’t know and when it comes to anime originals I don’t know why they hamstring themselves like this. I know that anime isn’t cheap to make but surely you can do more than twelve episodes when you have this complicated story you’re trying to tell?
