Our Take

Picking up long after the events of the first season, Trapped in a Dating Sim wastes little time reintroducing Leon as he returns to the academy only to find himself dragged into yet another string of noble obligations and political headaches. While the premiere serves primarily as a refresher, it also lays the foundation for the season’s next major adventure, reuniting familiar faces and hinting at new conflicts without revealing too much. Leon’s sarcastic personality remains the driving force, and his growing reputation continues to land him in increasingly troublesome situations.

As a season opener, the rest of the proceedings is fun, and the English dub gave me a few laughs even if all of it feels more like a lengthy setup than a compelling standalone chapter. The pacing moves briskly through its recap and introductions, leaving little room for meaningful character moments, though none of the character interactions were boring. The biggest talking point, however, is the visual overhaul. Despite ENGI returning as the animation studio, the redesigned character art is noticeably different from the first season, leaving more to be desired as it gives off more of a generic appearance, lacking the colorful personality that helped define Season One.

Overall, this is a serviceable return that focuses more on reestablishing the world than delivering an exciting premiere. Although the altered art style and fast-paced setup may disappoint some returning viewers, Leon’s entertaining antics and the promise of another adventure are enough to keep longtime fans invested. Hopefully, with the introductions out of the way, the season can slow down, expand on its characters, and recapture the charm that made the first season so enjoyable.
