Picking up from the previous episode, Thunder 3 raises the stakes in a big way as the true nature of the alien occupation begins to emerge. What first appeared to be a strange, detached presence quickly gives way to a far more oppressive reality, creating an atmosphere of constant unease. While there is one genuinely disturbing moment of graphic violence, the episode’s greatest strength lies in how it builds tension through implication, quiet interactions, and the overwhelming sense of fear hanging over everyday life.
Despite its bleak tone, the rest of the proceedings attempts to balance its darker themes with exhilarating action. As Futaba once again proves far more resilient than anyone expects, the Small 3 finally take the fight to the invaders in a series of immensely satisfying confrontations. Their incredible abilities provide a much-needed spark of hope, making for some of the episode’s most memorable moments without losing sight of the group’s original mission.
Overall, Thunder 3 continues to distinguish itself with its blend of suspense, action, and remarkably effective world-building. It manages to be unsettling, exciting, and surprisingly thought-provoking all at once, making each episode feel more engrossing than the last. It’s easily one of the season’s most overlooked series, and if it can sustain this momentum, it has the makings of one of the year’s standout anime.
